"Macau: An Economy in Transition"

Summary of the Presentation
Macau is going through a period of intense economic and social change, raising expectations of a sustained and very high economic growth for most of this decade. The pace of change and its many consequences suggest that an increased reflection effort is needed regarding the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. The presentation is aimed at a non-specialist audience and will focus on the main trends of the economic development of Macau and their likely implications.
Profile of the Speaker
José I. Duarte is a graduate in Economics from the University of Coimbra and has pursued post-graduate studies on Science and Technology Policy at the University of Manchester, UK. During most of his career he has been involved in international R&D cooperation activities. He has been engaged in prospective and monitoring of high-technology sectors studies carried within the Ministry of Science and Technology of Portugal and has been the national project coordinator for the Portuguese participation in the European industrial research programme EUREKA. Before moving to Macau, he served for about five years at the international EUREKA Secretariat in Brussels. He is currently an invited lecturer of Economics at the Faculty of Law of the University of Macau, and writes a regular column on international economics in the English language monthly Macau Business . His current interests focus on international trade and environmental economics.
