Charles Chauderlot

Charles Chauderlot has lived in Beijing since 1997. His art in drawing China marries Chinese brush with French technique. When he was only 11 years old, his art teacher discovered his talents and made him follow the courses of his own master at the Fine Arts School of the city of Bordeaux. He has participated in numerous exhibitions. Widely considered as a privileged witness of present days Beijing, he has prepared a choice of his works, presently exhibited in Hong Kong.

Introduction

Charles Chauderlot is the first foreign visitor to have been allowed to penetrate inside all the restricted areas of the Forbidden City. During nearly two years, he has fixed his look on the palaces, the streets, the portals and doors , the corridors, the bridges and water canals of the “Great Inside.” He has come out with 81 ink drawings realised with the Chinese brush, an art in which he has acquired mastery, and with the day-to-day narrative of this unique experience. What he is able to give us to see, no picture, no drawing ha s ever shown before. In cooperation with his Sinologist friend Cyrille Javary , he has sounded out the secrets of the Forbidden City so as to propose of it a reading – historical, symboli c , geomanti c and num e rologi c – which give s a new light on the Purple City.
