Introduction
Tomás Pereira was the chief defender of the Portuguese padroado in the China Mission against the French Jesuits, who were dispatched by Louis XIV in the 1680s as direct representatives of French diplomacy and science. Their reluctance and later refusal to submit to the authority of the Jesuit Portuguese Vice-Province of China provoked an intense crisis in the Jesuit Mission. This presentation explores the personal conflict between Pereira and Gerbillon, the intervention of the Kangxi Emperor, and the wider significance of this tension in the crucial years of the China Mission.
