Christian Cochini S.J.
Christian COCHINI, S.J. received his Doctorate in Theology from the Catholic Institute of Paris in 1969. He studied Chinese in Taiwan from 1961 to 1963, and taught French at the Guangdong Foreign Language Institute both in 1973-74 and in 1986-90. From 1991 to 2001, he was the Director of the “Jesuit China Center” in Tokyo, a socio-pastoral Center for the Chinese living in Japan. He resides now in Hong Kong and in Mainland China, where he keeps working in the field of interreligious dialogue with Chinese Buddhist communities.
Introduction
Buddhism in China is experiencing a spectacular revival. With more than 28,000 temples, 240,000 Monks and Nuns and 38 Buddhist studies institutes, it shows a vitality rooted in a thousand-year-old history and a dynamism full of promise. Many emperors and princes favored the integration and the development of Buddhism in China. Without a Xuanzang spending 17 years in a perilous expedition to go to India in search of Scriptures, without a Jianzhen who, at the cost of his sight, went to Japan to propagate the Dharma, and without many other eminent Monks who, out of love of the Dharma braved as much insurmountable difficulties, Buddhism would have never become acclimatized in China and in East Asia.
