Introduction

Filioque has been labeled as the watershed between the East and the West of Christendom. It has become a minor issue in ecumenical dialogue, yet theologically whether to see the Holy Spirit as proceeded from the Father alone or from the Father and the Son together speaks for a different focus in Trinitarian theology. Does filioque lie at the center of the Trinitarian doctrine? Does the theological difference make sense in the Chinese context? The lecture will answer these questions by looking at how the Church Fathers speak of the role of the Holy Spirit in the forming of the Trinitarian doctrine.
